Bead shop in Aiken also has classes on jewelry

After years of designing computer software, Shirley Townsend made a career change.

"I wanted to do something more fun," said Mrs. Townsend, who opened Beads and Baubles at 226 Park Ave. S.E. in Aiken four years ago.

At Mrs. Townsend's urging, her daughter opened a similar store in Columbia 15 years ago and seemed to be enjoying it.

Beads and Baubles has a large supply of beads and related materials.

"We have beads from the Czech Republic; we have glass beads in strands and individually in bowls. We have Asian beads. China makes some unique beads," she said.

There are several classes scheduled at the store. From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mrs. Townsend will teach basic beading. The class costs $24.

Other classes include wire wrap with Daniel Morgan from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, and wire crochet with Cheri Dowd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

Ms. Dowd's crochet techniques have been featured in national magazines.

For those who don't want to make their own jewelry, the shop offers bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Many of the pieces are made by local artists.

A special bead event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. BeadforLife is a program that supports women in Uganda who live in extreme poverty, often caring for several children who have been orphaned by AIDS. The women create colorful beads that can be made into jewelry.

Beads, jewelry and hand-sewn jewelry bags will be available during the special event.

"It's exciting. I'm hoping for a wonderful turnout," Mrs. Townsend said.

She said she will have BeadforLife products in her store for two weeks after the show. All of the proceeds will be used to benefit the Ugandan women, she said.
